About us

Leatherworks Adelaide is a small design studio producing quality handmade leather goods. The product range combines selected fine quality leathers, traditional and contemporary construction techniques with meticulous attention to detail.

Rob McRae is principal designer-maker at Leatherworks and was formally trained in Florentine leather design at the Jam Factory Leather studio (in the original iconic Payneham Road location in Adelaide).

Form and function drive design concepts resulting in classic simplicity, subtle detailing and refined style. All bags have fully lined leather interiors with convenient, user friendly phone and zipper pockets. Logo labels are subtle, understated and placed discreetly on the internal surface.

Every part of the making process is done in the Adelaide studio, all material is hand cut and hand finished in artisan tradition. Select leathers are sourced from Australia and Italy to meet exacting performance standards of hand feel, durability and appearance.

Unique, limited edition and handmade, our philosophy is relatively simple. We use and respect the best materials available, maximise traditional and contemporary techniques and tools, ensure designs function as they should and maintain an overall consistent quality and appearance standard.

Customer satisfaction is an important factor to our success and as such designs are fine-tuned, refined and evolve based on their valuable feedback. We aim to provide superior products that endure time, continue to look good and offer exceptional value for our customers.

Our designs should not dominate, but simply compliment your own personal style and become the favourite item for many years.

Materials & Construction

At Leatherworks Adelaide we use selected materials that meet our specific appearance and function criteria.

All leather is genuine 100% full grain bovine or kangaroo, all linings are pigskin.

Italian full grain cowhide is our premium bag and accessory leather. It is a beautiful rustic full grain leather, finished with oils and waxes to provide a very natural appeal. This tannage creates a subtle pull up effect giving it a warm two tone appearance. This leather is produced using best quality European hides. Natural markings and defects may be seen and these hallmarks are an integral part of the leather’s character.  Full aniline finish in average thickness of 1.0mm this leather has soft hand feel with high durability.

Australian vegetable tanned Kangaroo is sourced primarily for smaller products. The finish is natural and matt, fine grain and fairly smooth. Kangaroo is one of the strongest leathers available, with extremely high tensile strength at lower thickness, we use around the 0.8mm range. This makes Kangaroo especially suitable for hip wallets and internal pockets subject to frequent use. Vegetable tanned leathers will soften and slightly darken with age and gain a warm natural patina.

Pigskin is our lining leather of choice. All bags are fully lined with pigskin (with sueded finish) to provide additional durability. Phone pockets, zip pocket internals and most wallet linings are cut and sewn from pigskin. While some minimal weight may be added to the product this is offset by the advantage of longevity and wearability, quality leather linings will simply last longer.

Hardware and fittings are selected for function, durability and appearance. We have chosen antique brass as our standard. The finish is complimentary to the leathers and remains subtle rather than dominant.

Terko satin threads are used in all products and specific weights are used for different applications. This thread has a natural appearance, high strength and meets global testing specifications.
